An homage to all things meat: The Shambles.

Maple Leaf butchery and restaurant specializing in house made sausage, meats and charcuterie. The food is about small plates…..think small to medium/large plates….with a focus on beer as the libation with 28+ on tap. The wine list counts a dozen choices spilt evenly between reds and whites by the bottle and glass. It leans old world.

The thing to have here is the charcuterie plate which can be ordered by serving size with or without cheese…..seems wrong to me but if you only like meat…….The single size is quite adequate for 2 to share. Make sure you don’t miss the pickled mushrooms…outstanding! Next were the clams…well presented with lardon…..things go better with pork once again. We also tried the salmon skin served on a bed of polenta which was very good as well. The Giardiniera made the dish…pickled peppers and kumquats with a salsa verde. You also need to try the chickpeas…trust me you must. They were delivered to the table with a romesco sauce which was unbelievably tasty. For dessert the choice was the apple, cherry and ginger tart….think pflaumenkuchen. The listed caramel was MIA so it might have been a bit richer with that add.

On a more recent visit we tried the sandwich menu….Korean sausage and the BBQ Duck. Both were excellent with the duck being the more spicy…from the mustard and not the BBQ sauce. The side of crispy Brussels were perfectly prepared.

On another visit, in addition to the charcuterie, we sampled the pickled vegetables…including blueberries and sour cherries and the smoked foie gras butter. Another must have…like foie gras pot de crème.

The space is nice but can be a bit on the loud side if it’s packed which is quite common.  They don’t take reservations but have a large bar area and it’s all first come first served. You must be at least 21 so keep that in mind if you have kids.

Service was very good….you may even be served by one of the owners!
