Repeat visit: Seafood Bar & Grill.
Funky little place on the Kohala Coast that we visited a few years ago. It’s upstairs…..and if there isn’t parking on the street level then go behind the building where you’ll find plenty of spaces. They have a deck which is nice and the view of downtown Kawaihae can’t be beat…..shipping containers and tanks mark your vista. Don’t be concerned by that…..it’s a popular spot and they don’t take reservations so expect to wait a bit for a table if you arrive at a time typical for dinner. They do have a large bar area that seems to turnover faster that the tables.
The food is a bit of an odd mix…Hawaiian, to Asian, to Mexican….to….I think you get the point…..no one will be disappointed by the choices. It is heavily seafood based but steaks, burgers and pizza are also available.
The specials this night included steamed Opah……Sunfish and grilled Hebi…..similar to swordfish. Both were good with the Opah on the light side and the Hebi served with a flavorful side of lilikoi sauce…..yellow passion fruit. Our last dish was the most interesting, the Chinese Black Bean Seafood Combo. Think mixed seafood in a very rich mushroom and onion based gravy. Tasted like there had to be some beef in there somewhere but that was not the case. Very interesting pairing of flavors. You have to have a side of the pineapple macadamia nut slaw……delicious.
This night there was no room for dessert.
Service was good and the prices were very reasonable by Hawaiian standards.
