Wait till you taste what’s inside: Wind Cries Mary.
In the downtown core on an unassuming corner but once inside you’ll know this is a special place.
The plates are meant to be shared so come prepared for that experience. They are also delivered as they are prepared. The cadence can be a bit overwhelming as you try to eat as the table fills with food but, it adds to the experience.
First to arrive was the albacore tuna quickly followed by the Vancouver Island cheeses with honey, nuts and raincoast crisps. Both were outstanding with the tuna really shining…made by the nuoc cham and, of course, the sushi grade tuna. Next up…tomatoes with ricotta, blackberries, basil and balsamic which was beautifully presented. We also tried the cauliflower cassoulet which was definitely worth the calories. But, the thing everyone raves about is their fried chicken…and for good reason. It arrives with squares of fried semolina, house made pickles and honey butter…outstanding flavors and the chicken, perfectly fried. We ended with 3 desserts! Chocolate chip cookies, pecan praline cake and a chocolate torte. Of course you know, since things go better with chocolate, the torte was to die for.
Overwhelmed by all the choices…they have a chef’s selection with an optional wine pairing if you can’t make up your mind. Also be aware that the menu changes frequently. The wine list leans heavily toward BC sources with US, old world with orange wines also offered.
They have tables in a small patio in front of the restaurant but ask for courtyard seating…it’s a lovely place to have dinner.
