Filipino takeaway: Archipelago Balikbayan Box.
Before COVID-19 hit, I had snagged a very hard to come by reservation at this well regarded restaurant with very limited seating. Alas…the reservation was cancelled so the next best thing was to sample their Balikbayan Box. Didn’t know exactly what to expect from the description but went with the fish and added Miki noodles with Mechado. The box comes packed with local produce from farms run by women and all the needed recipes to pull it off at home.
While not complex to prepare, it was a bit unnerving having never cooked Filipino food in the past and also having a somewhat limited experience with the cuisine. I think we pulled it off. My favorite was the Miki noodles.
The wine was a very interesting whole cluster rosé of Pinot Gris from Minimus Wines in Oregon…made possible by the slightly reddish skins of this varietal. I have to say this is one unique rosé. Slightly tart but without the typical red fruit found in most rosés. It also appears to have been left on the lees for a time giving it a bit of yeasty notes and a slight haziness. Give it a try if you can find a bottle…it’s a small, almost experimental producer.
Here’s an update following a sit down experience.
